Vinyl Siding Installation

When it comes to price, durability, and ease of maintenance, vinyl siding installation is one of the most common home improvements in the country for good reason. It looks good, and it’s easy to find a variety that will appeal to almost anybody.

Vinyl Siding Installation Over Another Surface

In older homes, vinyl siding installation can often be installed over the existing cladding. This is one of the reasons why vinyl is such a popular choice for remodels. In many cases, the preparation for this job is simple.

Vinyl Siding Installation in New Construction

It is even easier to install vinyl siding in a new house, and many contractors will recommend it because it is so durable and easy to work with. A new house with new vinyl siding will look great for many years and require very little maintenance.

Care of Vinyl Siding

Though it is very resistant to stains, vinyl siding can become discolored if it comes into contact with certain chemicals. In a residential setting, these chemicals are most often found in bug or weed spray. Take special care to look at the label of your lawn care products, as well as any information that comes with the siding itself.

After installation is complete, there is very little that needs to be done to maintain its new appearance. It can be sprayed down with a hose to wash away loose dirt. When necessary, it can be cleaned with a wet rag or bristled brush and a mild detergent. Those who own a power washer can use it to clean their vinyl siding but should be careful not to aim the nozzle upward, as water could collect behind the panels.

Vinyl Siding Repair

If an impact is strong enough and confined to a small enough area, it is certainly possible to puncture vinyl siding. Repair in this case will depend a lot on the size of the hole. A hole that is very small may be able to be patched with a small cut piece of siding. For larger, more noticeable holes, it is generally recommended that the entire panel the hole is located on be replaced. Both of these operations require the use of spare siding. When you get your siding installed, it is a very good idea to purchase a bit extra for use in repairs down the road.

Replacing a panel of vinyl siding can be a tricky job. It requires the use of a zip tool to open the seam between the affected panel and the one above it. Nails will have to be removed, taking caution not to damage the panels or the insulation and backing underneath them. In many cases, this is a job best left to the professionals as the process, though not impossible for a first-timer, is one where proper technique and an experienced hand cut down on project time (and possible damage) dramatically.

Once again, purchasing extra panels of siding during installation can really come in handy when vinyl siding repairs are necessary. If you don't have a small stock of extra panels, you might be able to find something that will come close to matching from a manufacturer. In most cases, however, it is extremely unlikely that a new siding panel will match the siding that has been fading on the house, even if it comes from the same manufacturer. If you need to replace a panel in the front of the house where it is highly visible, you will probably need to replace it with a vinyl panel taken from somewhere in the back of the house. Then the new siding can be hidden well in the back, on the bottom, or behind some shrubs.
